Julie Gonzalo certainly looks like the quintessential all-American girl. In fact, her previous roles as a cheerleader in both “A Cinderella Story” and “Dodgeball” only emphasize her girl next door mystique. But, as our mamas always taught us…appearances can be deceiving.
Hollywood’s love affair with the comic book industry continues with current movies “The Dark Knight,” Hellboy II: The Golden Army,” and “Wanted” making a massive impact at the box office. And, with additional movies being adapted from graphic novels and comic titles like Punisher: War Zone, Captain America, The Watchmen, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Avengers, Thor, and The Spirit, the movie and comic twosome appears to be headed for a very happy ending.
So there’s this super-slim woman running around my television wearing a crisp, white button-down shirt, a black tie with an olive green blazer and skinny, black pants and belt complete with clip capabilities and I know that whatever she’s doing, it must be pretty important.
It’s a rare, rainy day in Los Angeles but that’s not keeping a busy Karli Henriquez down. The spunky host of MTV Tr3s’ “Karlifornia” is getting ready for her other gig as radio personality, Karli from the Block, on KIIS-FM in Los Angeles. I’m driving down famed Sunset Avenue on a bright, sunny afternoon in Los Angeles when I come across a massive billboard of TNT’s gigantic hit show “The Closer,” looming over the cars, pedestrians and tourists below. It features all the major players in their obligatory cop suits and sporting some very serious faces. It’s somewhat ironic as I just happen to be on my way to meet one of that show’s stars, Gina Ravera and I wonder if I should be concerned, given those stern faces looking back at me.
“Aimee G., spicy, Mexi-Rican chick in town. Call if you want to see her.” No, it’s not an online dating service or personal ad. It’s actually an announcement actress Aimee Garcia mass mailed to casting directors upon her arrival in Los Angeles three years ago, declaring her presence. “Who does that?” she asks, laughing. “I’ve always come out here with a no holds barred, unapologetic kind of attitude. How are people going to know you’re here if you don’t announce it?” Indeed. Did it work? “I got a gig ten days after I landed,” professes Aimee.
Sure, being on “NCIS” has taught Cote de Pablo a thing or two about stressful situations. But the Chilean born, Miami raised actress isn’t all about the drama. In fact, the very sweet, very funny stage performer let’s us in on why she has an affinity for Andre 3000, what gives her butterflies, and who she thinks should be on the cover of Vogue.
She’s funny, gorgeous, genuine, smart and way cool. The New Yorker has found her groove in Los Angeles and a role in the surprise smash hit television series “Ugly Betty.” She may play feisty on the small screen, but this talented actress has us wishing she was our big sister.
