Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna have teamed up for the second time in their movie careers for the Sony Pictures Classic film “Rudo y Cursi.” Instead of best friends trying to bed anything that moves (“Y Tu Mamá También”), the two play laborer brothers Tato and Beto in rural Mexico.
Things take a sudden change when a soccer scout catches them playing a friendly game of soccer and signs them on as star athletes for rival teams. Of course, this sparks a bitter feud between the two, as players and brothers, not to mention all the downfalls that come with sudden fame and money. The Spanish language with English subtitles film is directed by Carlos Cuarón and is the first project produced by Alfonso Cuarón, Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro González Iñárritu through their new company, CHA CHA CHÁ.
If Bernal weren’t doing enough for his latest role, he’s taken to performing on the movie’s soundtrack singing a Regional Mexican version of the Cheap Trick classic I Want You To Want Me titled Quiero Que Me Querias. The soundtrack is co-produced by Mexican Institute of Sound’s Camilo Lara and the film’s director Carlos Cuarón.
“The idea to record Latin alternative versions of Regional Mexican classics actually came to me after I saw the movie for the first time,” Lara explains. “There wasn’t much room for new music and even less room for ‘modern’ music. So while talking with Carlos we decided it was a really great idea to approach artists to record new versions.”
