You already know that winter can do a number on your skin, but let’s not forget about your tresses. They need a lot of TLC, too. We spoke with Dustin David of the Dustin David Salon to find out how to better care for our hair during the winter months…

Should we change our hairstyles for each season?

The winter season brings a great time to change or update your hairstyle. Mid-length hair can be brought up above the neck, perfect for those winter turtlenecks. For those weary of getting your hair cut, richening your hair color is a great way to get rid of those old summer highlights. A lot of people enjoy wearing their hair up, so adding some soft layers around the face helps to update your traditional look.

How do we keep hair from getting dried out during the cold months?

During the cold season, hair has a tendency to be dry from excessive blowdrying and hot styling tools. I always recommend a more moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, as well as heat protection products to prevent hair from drying out. With each salon visit, get a
moisturizing treatment and try to follow up with at-home treatment masks once or twice a week.

Can you suggest any products?

I recommend Kérastase Masquintense and Bumble and Bumble Deep Treatment. For heat protection I recommend Kérastase Ciment Thermique and Liscio Heat Protection Spray. Kérastase In-salon Express Treatments are a great alternative to the traditional masks, as they work in little time to add maximum moisture and repair to the hair.

How does wearing a hat damage your hair?

Hats typically will not damage hair unless it is pinned on, or worn excessively. Make sure to wash your hair frequently if you are a daily hat wearer, to reduce problematic scalp issues.

If we can only do one healthy thing for our hair this season, what should it be?

The one healthy choice for hair this season….get an in-salon treatment! If your hair is dull from all its abuse, ask for cellophane at your next hair appointment. This will add protection to the hair as well as adding shine.

Dustin David’s Top 5 “Do’s” for the Winter:

  1. Full, big blowouts
  2. Big, curly, “wild” hair
  3. “Up swept” and soft for holiday parties (can be done at a salon or even at home with a curling iron and hair accessories)
  4. Smooth, shiny extremely straight hair (make sure to use a spray gloss such as Bumble and Bumble Big Shine for that extremely shiny finish)
  5. For those with shorter hair, beautiful finger waves, or sleek, and sophisticated flat ironed hair is popular
