Vida Guerra Sets The Record Straight

Cuban born Vida Guerra may be known for putting FHM Magazine on the map, but there’s more to Vida than meets the eye. She’s working on her self-titled CD and has designs on her own clothing line, VG. And oh yeah, the self-described goofy girl talks about those nasty rumors going around…
Your family is from Cuba. When did you move to the US?
We left Cuba when I was five-years-old. We went to Costa Rica to the Bahamas to Miami and then to New Jersey all in 3 months.
Was it difficult for you?
Well I didn’t know how to speak English at school. I spoke only Spanish so that was kind of weird.
How did the whole FHM/modeling thing start?
It was very unexpected. An ex-boyfriend of mine sent my photo in to FHM Magazine and 6 months later they called me and told me they wanted to do this photo shoot, like an ordinary girl type thing. I was a loan officer, basically working a 9 to 5. I went from that to traveling, appearances, photo shoots to quitting my job. Well, kind of getting fired. It was just like a hobby thing and then it turned into something.
After appearing in FHM and Playboy do you feel people had a misconception about you or judged you?
It seems that if you’re sexy, you’re automatically trashy. Basically, people think I’m this party girl but I don’t go out to clubs unless it’s a big event or something. They think I have all these guys, like this exciting life which I don’t. (laughs) My pictures have always been in good taste, very classy. Some girls that I see on MySpace, I’m just like wow. It’s crazy.
How do women treat you?
Nowadays, they grab me more than the guys. But growing up, boys liked me and some of the girls got jealous. I didn’t have girlfriends.
Has that changed?
Oh yeah. I’m actually friends with people who didn’t like me when I was younger.
So what happened with you and rap artist The Game? He’s said some not so nice things about you in his music.
I was like, wow, I didn’t know he was going to take rejection so hard. (laughs) The way he acted was crazy. He was at a party I was at. When he walked in the door he started talking to me a few minutes later. He was trying to get at me and he’s not my type at all.
Was recording music something you’ve always wanted to do?
I’d always say I was going to be famous when I was little. I use to perform for my friends. It’s always something I wanted to do but my parents are from Cuba and they didn’t really know anything about that.
Has the transition from model to singer been easy?
It’s still in transition. It’s a matter of changing their opinions. You can’t afford not to get where you want to be.
Any projects you’re currently working on?
A clothing line, called VG. It’s a vision that I have. At first I wanted to do a sports line for working out, and then doing jeans and t-shirts, something like Marciano. And, eventually, depending on the success of that, a couture line
Do you see yourself getting married, having a family?
Yes, that’s what I want. People think I’m dating around. I don’t see myself with just anybody. I’m not just going to casually date.
Is there anyone you look up to?
You have to admire all these women you have come from nowhere to be successful. Oprah, J. Lo, a lot of people like that. People are always so quick to judge and hate on people but I always try to look at it as a positive thing. I’m just fortunate enough that I’m able to do the things I want to do as far as my career. Anyone that knows me knows that I’m still the same person.
