Cristina Saralegui’s Bed & Bath Collection

Media powerhouse, Cristina Saralegui, made her mark as host and executive producer on Univision’s immensely popular “The Cristina Show.” She has since received 12 Emmys, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and countless awards. In 2005, the Casa Cristina Collection, comprised of bedroom, dining, and entertainment pieces, debuted to rave reviews, leading to Cristina to be honored as one of “The 50 Most Influential People in Home Furnishings Style and Design” in 2006. This past December Cristina introduced her Bed and Bath Collection, sold exclusively through Kohl’s stores. We caught up with Cristina to talk about her home line and find out what inspires her.

When did the Latin-based décor trend take hold in the US?

Latin-based décor is a growing trend and this is not surprising given the large population of people of Latin decent living in the U.S. Global influences have been evident in fashion and home for several years now, and the growth of Latin inspired design is seen in markets across the country. For me, partnering with a company like Kohl’s, which has such a strong nationwide presence, gives me the opportunity to bring my Latin influenced Casa Cristina collection to a broad audience, further expanding the Latin home trend.

What are some of the trademark features of this trend?

With the emergence of Latin-based décor, we are seeing a vibrant mix of bright colors, dark tones and brilliant shades of white to accent the overall look. These designs reflect heritage and Latin décor brings with it a lovely array of florals and energetic patterns combined with textured elements, wrought iron and unique details, such as terracotta.

How widespread is the trend and what should people look for when shopping?

Global offerings are definitely gaining visibility in the marketplace. I live in Miami where Latin décor is abundant and in my travels across the country I am seeing more and more of the Latin influence reflected in design. Home décor is about making your house truly a reflection of self. So when shopping for home décor, you should look for pieces that you identify with or are curious to know more about. As with many projects, it is easy to get overwhelmed when thinking about changing your home’s décor. I recommend focusing on one room at a time. It simplifies the process, takes away the intimidation factor and allows you to relax and truly be creative.

What is your background and how did you come to adopt this trend?

I was born in Cuba and currently live in Miami, so I have been surrounded by Latin influences my whole life. My hobby is history and I enjoy studying the background of design in countries of Latin origin, especially Spain’s northern Basque region where some of my family still lives. Latin design inspires me and you can see its influence, as well as my fondness for classic design elements, clearly illustrated in my new Casa Cristina
collection.
